Warning, Probation, Suspension

Naturally, we hope you will not need to know this information. But just in case...

A first time freshman whose grade point average is below 2.0 is placed on academic warning. Students on warning should work closely with their adviser to help ensure a more successful second semester. A maximum of 15 credits per semester is allowed for students on warning.

Anyone else whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 will be placed on academic probation. A student may continue to attend the university while on probation, but must maintain a semester GPA of 2.0 or better to avoid suspension. A maximum of 15 credits per semester is allowed for students on probation.

A student who is on probation and whose semester GPA is below 2.0 will be suspended. The first suspension is for one semester, the second is for one year, and the third is permanent. After a year following the third suspension, if unusual circumstances warrant it, the student may petition the Academic Deans' Council, through the Director of Admissions and Records, for readmission. No credit will be given for courses taken at other institutions while under suspension from NMSU.

Students who are suspended at the end of a spring semester may attend summer sessions at NMSU. If the spring and summer GPA's combined equal a 2.0 or better, the suspension will be rescinded. Students will not be suspended on the basis of summer work alone.
