Information for Potential Transfer Students Basic Skills Requirements

Before enrolling in any upper division courses (numbered 300 or higher), students must meet basic skills requirements in English and mathematics. Transfer students may enroll in upper division courses the first semester at NMSU without having met these requirements. However, if they are not met during the first semester, subsequent enrollment in upper division courses is denied until the requirements are met.

To meet the English basic skill requirement, you must do one of the following:

  • Submit transcript showing you have completed a college freshman composition course, at least 3 credits, with a grade of C or better.
  • Submit Advanced Placement English score of 3 or higher.
  • Submit CLEP Freshman Composition subject exam score of 50 or higher.
  • Submit ACT scores, English standard score of 30 or higher. This does not eliminate Rhetoric and Composition as a university general education requirement.

To meet the mathematics basic skill requirement, you must do one of the following:

  • Submit ACT scores, mathematics standard score of 23 or higher.
  • Submit transcript showing you have completed either basic algebra or intermediate algebra, or higher level math course, at least 3 credits, with a grade of C or higher.
  • Pass the NMSU mathematics department's basic skills examination.
