Otis, Alfred & Erskine
Alpha Tau Omega's three founders — Otis Allan Glazebrook, Erskine Mayo Ross, and Alfred Marshall — all attended the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA.

All born in 1845, each man participated in the Battle of New Market, an incredible battle in the Civil War.

Glazebrook graduated first in his class from VMI, shortly thereafter enrolling in a seminary. Ultimately Glazebrook served as U.S. Consul to Jerusalem during Woodrow Wilson's presidency.

Ross, cited for bravery at the Battle of Cedar Run, moved to California after the Civil War. He was admitted to the bar in 1869 and served on the California Supreme Court. Ross helped found the city of Glendale, CA where a suburb — Rossmoyne — still bears his name.

Marshall was the son of a British tobacco grower in Richmond, VA. He taught math and tactics briefly at VMI before becoming an assistant engineer with the Mobile & Montgomery Railroad. During this time, he supervised construction of track through swampy terrain. Because of this, at the age of 25, he died of yellow fever.
