| The New Mexico Border Health Council was organized in 1990 to help
address the health issues created by rapid population growth and economic
development in the New Mexico Border region.
The Border Health Council is a volunteer organization of professionals
and community representatives, mainly from throughout Southern New
Mexico.

The Council's primary mission is to improve the health status of
the
New Mexico border population through advocacy, community education, and
resource development. |

Its members advocate for improved health status in the border
region
by being proactive in identifying problems at the community level and
developing
specific strategies and solutions. |
The Council serves as the primary community advisory body to the Border
Health Office of the New Mexico Department of Health.
The Council works to actively represent the concerns of the New Mexico
border community by making recommendations at the local, state, and
federal
levels, promoting the improvement of basic public health and primary care
services, and seeking infrast ructure and health research
development.
The Council's accomplishments have included the development of plans
for the creation and funding of La Clínica de Familia Promotora
Project and the New Mexico Border Health Office. The Council publishes
position papers on issues critical to the New Mexico border region. The
Council also distributes a quarterly binational / bilingual newsletter
to maintain communication with its members and the U.S. - Mexico border
community.
Broad based community representation is the key to the Council's
ongoing
success. Membership is open to all interested individuals.
