Mission
To improve the overall health status and health and human services in
the New Mexico border region and other border-impact areas of the
state.
Goals
*Develop systematic information,
surveillance, research and data collection systems to
monitor
changes in health status
* Develop systematic health
planning and assessment process for the border area, to include such areas
as mental health, emergency medical
services and dental care
* Improve access to maternal
and child health services
* Develop and conduct
training programs and assist in the need for health professionals and
community health workers
* Develop mechanisms for
cooperating with health officials of neighboring states and Mexico
* Develop environmental
surveillance systems that includes water quality monitoring of surface and
ground water and remediation activities
* Assist in the development
and funding of health projects
Background
The Border Health Office (BHO) is a component office of District III,
Public Health Division, New Mexico Department of Health. It began
operations
in 1993 and is located in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
The Border Health Office has an established affiliation with the
Department of
Health Sciences, College of Health & Social Services through
a contract
between the Public Health Division and New Mexico State University.
Community Input
Structure
The New Mexico Border Health Council serves as the primary advisory
board to the Border Health Office.
