Academic Services

Available to all NMSU Students

These are some of the services available to our students. For more information regarding other university resources, visit Black Programs.

To assist all students in developing to their fullest potential academically, socially, emotionally, and interpersonally. The Counseling Center recognizes that a student's academic success is dependent upon their emotional well-being, their belief in themselves, and their ability to successfully interact with the interpersonal world that surrounds them. We assist students by providing them with opportunities for self-exploration and growth, by offering needed support in times of crisis, and by providing career information and guidance.

All applications for grants and student loans are handled through the Office of Financial Aid. Each January, the federal government issues a new Federal Application Form for Student Aid (FAFSA), which is used to apply for all types of aid. Uncle Sam is very picky about how the forms are filled out, so you need to be careful. The financial aid office offers workshops to help students decipher the form, and it will be well worth your while to take advantage of them. Because of the nature of its business, the financial aid office is one of the busiest and most overworked on campus. Plan ahead-call at least two weeks in advance to make an appointment with your financial aid adviser.

The Mathematics Learning Center (Walden Hall, Room 101) is here to help you with any Mathematics class you may be enrolled in. They offer both mastery based and lecture based courses. Choose the one that fits your learning style.

If you are an NMSU student who wants to maximize your learning potential and get better grades, the Student Success Center-Hardman can help you develop the skills you need to excel in college. We offer UNIV Courses & Mid-Semester courses, the Freshman Year Experience (FYE) course, TRiO Programs, and more.

If you are an NMSU student seeking information on all support services across campus, from tutoring to academic advising, the Student Success Center-Zuhl can help. We offer Cross Campus Advising, Campus Tutoring Service, and the
QuickConnect-Early Alert and Intervention Program.

The program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next.

The Writing Center is a free service available for all NMSU students. We work with writers at any level of experience. The Center is staffed by graduate assistants who teach undergraduate writing courses through the English Department. We provide one-on-one consultations at any stage of the writing process, from understanding assignment directions to revising final drafts. Please be aware that we do not offer editing services, although we can work with you on aspects of proofreading and editing.
