Academic Services Available to Students at NMSU

These are some of the services available to our students. For more information regarding other university resources, visit Black Programs.

Center for Learning Assitance

The Center for Learning Assistance, in Hardman Hall, provides a variety of services to help students learn more in less time with greater ease and confidence. This may mean, for instance, diagnosis and prescription of particular materials and methods for improving reading, aid in study skills, help in writing term papers, or providing backup for specific course content. The Center helps students on a drop-in basis and offers workshops as well as credit courses. Students can take UNIV 110, Personal Learning Skills I as an individualized course for one credit, or Academic and Personal Effectiveness, a classroom course, for two credits.

Financial Aid

All applications for grants and student loans are handled through the Office of Financial Aid. Each January, the federal government issues a new Federal Application Form for Student Aid (FAFSA), which is used to apply for all types of aid. Uncle Sam is very picky about how the forms are filled out, so you need to be careful. The financial aid office offers workshops to help students decipher the form, and it will be well worth your while to take advantage of them. Because of the nature of its business, the financial aid office is one of the busiest and most overworked on campus. Plan ahead-call at least two weeks in advance to make an appointment with your financial aid adviser.

To be eligible, a student must be a freshman or sophomore whose parents have not graduated from college and / or meet the U.S. Department of Education income guidelines.
