Student Life Organizations for Black Students

African Unity Club

Purpose: The Unity Club strives to increase social and cultural awareness about African and African-American peoples. Some of the topics considered by the club include culture, dance, food, clothing and issues such as African-American history, politics and health.

Impact

Vision: A ministry with a commitment to spirituality as it is lived out in the African-American experience, IMPACT extends beyond the walls of auditoriums to capture the energy and vision of young people. IMPACT extends into the global community while providing religious leadership and motivation to African-American students.

NMSU Gospel Ensemble

Purpose: The main goal of this long-standing small group choir is to provide an educational opportunity to understand, appreciate and participate in the nations's African-American heritage through the medium of gospel and jazz music.

Effective Fall 2005, the NMSU Music Department as agreed to offer college credit for participation in the Gospel Choir. (Note the name will be changed to NMSU Gospel Choir). Rehearsals are scheduled for Wednesday nights from 7pm-9pm in the Choral Room. The courses to register for are:

Music 161, Section 02 for Freshman and Sophomore students
Music 362, Section 02 for Junior, Senior and Graduate students

 

NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers)

Purpose: NSBE is a student-run, professional organization supporting African-American students in technical majors as well as students in other majors and people of every creed and ethnicity. NSBE also provides opportunities for students, including job fairs, interships and extra-curricular activities.

Zeta Phi Beta

Purpose: Zeta's national and local programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation, community outreach services, and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary troops have given many hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change. A non-profit organization, Zeta Phi Beta is incorporated in Washington D.C. and in the state of Illinois . The Sorority is supported by the dues and gifts of its members.
