 Emergency Action Plan

Chicano Programs- Garcia Annex

A list of emergency numbers should be listed at Chicano Programs near phones.

911- main emergency number for fire, police, etc.

This Emergency Action Plan is included in the Chicano Programs staff handbook and will be reviewed and updated every year. The EAP will also be posted on a bulletin board at the entrance to Chicano Programs along with a map of the emergency escape route.

Staff members will be trained on the location of all exits, fire extinguishers and information about Bomb Threats, the Bomb Threat Checklist, the proper use of emergency calls to 911 as well as the Emergency Evacuation Plan below.

This information is included in Chicano Programs’ Staff Handbook.

Emergency Evacuation Plan:

The Emergency Evacuation Plan coordinator is the Director of Chicano Programs, in her or his absence, the Alternate Emergency Evacuation Plan coordinator is the Chicano Program’s Secretary.

In the case of fire, or other emergency that requires evacuation, the Director or Secretary will instruct all personnel, students and visitors to leave the premises. This direction may be received from another building monitor, from the Office of the Vice President for Student Services, the Provost or the President.

There is no sound alarm in Garcia Annex. Departments are notified by phone of an evacuation.

In the case of evacuation, it is important that staff immediately assess who is in Chicano Programs to be notified of the evacuation. As the evacuation occurs, staff need to check each office in Chicano Programs, the student lounge, computer office, restrooms, and perhaps the basement to ensure all our staff, students and visitors are out. A buddy system will be implemented. Doors should be closed if possible as individuals exit.

Exiting the building should be quick but orderly and in a calm fashion. The preferred exit from the building is through the south east doors. If that is blocked, exit through the west door is possible. If that is blocked, there are exits located on the 2nd floors on both the south and north ends.

Aid will be given to any handicapped individuals, i.e. wheelchair bound, blind or dear individuals. Chicano Programs is located on the ground floor.

Emergency Meeting Place

Once individuals have exited the building, it is important that all Chicano Programs staff and students move immediately to the emergency meeting place for Chicano Programs.  This is the triangular desert landscaping area to the east of the building (immediately north of the student parking lot and the faculty/staff parking lots).

As soon as possible, role should taken in order to make sure that all staff members and other individuals have safely exited the building. If all individuals have not exited the building safely, a staff member should inform police or emergency personnel immediately.

Emergency Phone Numbers

The Chicano Programs Secretary should keep an updated list of the home phone numbers of all staff members and also the names and phone numbers of an individual to be contacted in the case of an emergency. This info should be written on a small wallet-card and given to all staff members. All staff members are required to carry this wallet card with them at all times.
