Application Process

The NMSU Counseling Center Training Program will be participating in the APPIC Internship Matching Program. The Program Code Number is 143811. All applicants must obtain Applicant Agreement Package from National Matching Services (NMS) and register for the Matching Program in order to be eligibile for our internship program. Eligibility

Prior to submitting an application package, candidates should decide whether or not they are seeking an internship experience that is comparable to what this internship program has to offer and to determine their eligibility to apply.  Only doctoral students in APA or CPA accredited Clinical and Counseling Psychology programs are invited to apply. 

Candidates must have completed supervised pre-internship practicum experience with a minimum of 400 hours of direct service and 200 hours indirect service. In addition to having completed all required coursework prior to beginning the internship, prospective interns must have completed their comprehensive examinations and submit verification by their Director of Training at the time of application regarding eligibility and readiness for the predoctoral internship experience.

Number of Positions/Time Frame of Internship

  • There are three full-time, 12-month internship positions available.
  • All interns are required to complete at least 2,000 hours (500 must be direct service) in order to satisfactorily finish the internship.
  • The training year will begin August 1 and end July 31.

  • Application Procedures

    The NMSU Internship Program adheres to the Match Policies established by the Association of Psychology, Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). Specifically, this internship agrees to abide by the APPIC Policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant.     Applicants can submit the following materials via e-mail attachment using Microsoft Word 9.0 and fax those materials that cannot be sent with an attachment such as the copy of transcripts (fax: 505-646-1975):

  • APPIC Application Form (AAPI)-download from http://www.appic.org/

  • Letter of interest
  • Current vita

  • Copy of the transcripts of all graduate work-an official copy of all graduate transcripts may be sent via mail after faxing the initial copy

  • Three letters of reference from professionals who are familiar with your clinical/counseling skills and academic performance.  At least two of these letters should be from individuals who directly supervised your practicum experience and one from your academic advisor (or equivalent) addressing your recent academic work

  • Due to institutional requirements, a background check may be required prior to the start date of the internship.
