Developing Your Career Plan

NMSU students

Everyone approaches career planning in a different way and a different time line. Following are suggestions to help you in your career planning process.

  • Make a tentative selection of a major field of study
  • Enroll in university core courses with the help of academic advisors
  • Take an introductory course in your interest field
  • Go to the Career Exploration Center for help
  • Get to know faculty, career counselors, and academic advisors
  • Familiarize yourself with the academic support services at NMSU
  • Take a career interest assessment to guide your choices and get career information
  • Research your career choices through web, print and informational interviewing resources
  • Join campus or academic organizations to further your leadership skills
  • Obtain a career related co-op or internship
  • Utilize the services of NMSU's Career Services Office with their career fairs, recruiters on campus, etiquette dinners and helpful tips of dress for the professional world.

Develop a timetable for your career development after graduation; therefore, in your junior year and at the beginning of your senior year, start to look for jobs or look at graduate schools

Network, network, network. Often it is who you know that will open the door of opportunity, but it is you and what you know that will keep you on the job.
