SEMINARS/ADDITIONAL TRAINING EXPERIENCES

In addition to the two hours/week for individual supervision, the following meetings and seminars are part of the training experience.

Intern Orientation

For the first two weeks of the internship year, interns participate in an orientation to the Center, become knowledgeable about Center policies, standards of care for crisis services, university resources, are trained in participating in outreach programming, and meet staff and other individuals within the university setting that they will be interacting with on an ongoing basis. The orientation is also a time when the initial assessments of intern skill level, interest areas, and individualized goals for the internship year are identified.

Staff Meetings

Interns are viewed as being integral members of the Center and attend the weekly staff meetings where administrative issues are addressed including policy decision-making. Once a month, the staff meeting is used for consultation with the Student Health Center psychiatrist about clients who are currently receiving medication and therapy services.

Clinical Issues Meeting

The Clinical Issues Meeting is an opportunity for professional staff, interns and master's interns meet to present and discuss clinical cases, consult with one another, and obtain support and feedback.

Intern Seminar

Intern seminar meets during both the fall and spring semesters for 1.5 hours each week. This seminar is devoted to professional staff members and other professionals conducting presentations on various clinical topics (e.g., psychodrama, theory and practice of career counseling, eating disorders, brief treatment). Additionally, this seminar time is used on a quarterly basis for interns to meet with the Training Coordinator to discuss concerns associated with their experience while on internship. Finally, professional development topics such as job search strategies or professional identity concerns, are also a focus during this seminar.

Assessment Seminar

The Assessment Seminar meets once a week during the fall semester and focuses in two areas: didactic training about various assessment instruments or relevant clinical topics (e.g., ethics in testing, suicide and depression assessment) and case presentation where interns consult about their assessments with clients.

Outreach and Consultation Seminar

This seminar occurs in the spring semester for one hour each week. Training in the various consultation models is provided during this seminar. Additionally, interns are able to receive feedback and discuss various outreach presentations and workshops they have conducted that have been challenging or difficult. Interns are given the opportunity to create their own outreach programming and consultation projects that are required to be met for the competency areas and to receive feedback on their projects as well as on their presentation style.

Supervision Seminar

This seminar meets for 1.5 hours/weekly during both the fall and spring semesters. During the fall semester, interns are presented with various theories of supervision and relevant research for discussion. The seminar is also devoted to case presentation and listening to recorded supervision sessions interns conduct with their individual supervisees. This focus provides interns with an opportunity to process their provision of supervision experiences and receive feedback. There is also the possibility that interns may be able to participate in some aspect of the provision of supervision for the professional development growth groups that are conducted by the doctoral practicum students for the master's students in the Counseling and Educational Psychology Program.

Multicultural Awareness Seminar

This seminar addresses issues relevant to multicultural awareness and issues relevant to all aspects of the internship experience. While the counseling services interns provide is a predominant focus for this seminar, the other services interns provide such as outreach and consultation or assessment, is also a focus of attention. It is during this seminar that cultural self-awareness is highlighted and explored. The Multicultural Awareness Seminar meets during the fall and spring semesters for one hour each week.

Research Seminar

This seminar meets for one hour every other week during both the fall and spring semesters. Interns will have the opportunity to discuss their dissertations/research papers, obtain feedback on research ideas, and present the data and information they collect for the purpose of both intern and staff development. Additionally, interns who choose to specialize in this area will be able to create research projects relevant to their clinical work, needs of the Counseling Center , or other interest areas and present their ideas as well.
