Dr. G. Larry Mays

 

 

 

Introduction

            Dr. G. Larry Mays is Regents Professor of Criminal Justice at New Mexico State University. He has been a member of the Criminal Justice Department since 1981.

 

Personal biography

            Dr. Mays holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee (1971). After obtaining his bachelor's degree he served in a variety of capacities with the Knoxville, Tennessee Police Department from 1971 through 1976 (the last year on an educational leave of absence). Dr. Mays obtained his master's degree in political science from East Tennessee State University (1975), and his Ph.D. in political science (1979) from the University of Tennessee .

            From 1975 through 1979 Dr. Mays was a faculty member in the Department of Criminal Justice at East Tennessee State University. He held an appointment in the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice at Appalachian State University from 1979-81. He joined the faculty of New Mexico State University as academic department head of Police Science (now Criminal Justice) and served in that capacity until 1990.

            In 2005 Dr. Mays was named Regents Professor, the highest honor bestowed upon faculty by New Mexico State University .

 

Research

            The focus of research for Dr. Mays is criminal justice policy. His particular interests are jails, juvenile justice (especially the area of transfers to adult courts), and courts and the judicial process. He is a regular contributor to the academic journals in the criminal justice field, as well as editing or authoring several criminal justice textbooks.

 

Publications

            Dr. Mays has published nearly 70 articles in regional, national, and international journals including the Journal of Criminal Justice, Crime & Delinquency, American Journal of Criminal Justice, the Prison Journal, Justice Quarterly, and Judicature. In addition, he has contributed nearly 40 book chapters, encyclopedia entries, and publications in practitioner journals. Finally, he is editor, co-editor, or co-author of 15 textbooks in the field of criminal justice including Gangs and Gang Behavior ( Wadsworth ), Courts & Justice, 3 rd edition (Waveland), Essentials of Corrections , 3 rd edition ( Wadsworth ), and Juvenile Justice, 2 nd edition (Waveland).
