The colony continued its efforts towards growth with the successful recruitment of seven men for the Theta Class, bringing the size of the chapter into the upper 20s. The chapter was also able to break down several barriers in the Greek Community during the semester, not only by recruiting one of the largest spring classes among fraternities on campus, but also by winning the People's Choice Award for Greek Sing, the Most Spirited Fraternity Award for Greek Week and placing a member on the Executive Board of the Inter-Fraternity Council.

The colony's rising stock on campus was nothing compared to its increased prestige in the eyes of its own members as the colony was approved for its charter at the Region II Leadership Conference held in San Luis Obispo, California, and hosted by the members of the Cal Poly Chapter. At 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, 1998 it was announced that the colonies at New Mexico State and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas would be receiving their charters during the following Fall Semester. Approximately 20 members of the colony attended the conference, some driving as many as 20 hours to attend. Members of the colony enjoyed the opportunity to meet members from the other chapters and colony of Region II, and had a great time during a weekend that became historic for Delta Chi at NMSU.

What would become the first chapter house was also located by members of the fraternity during the Spring 1998 semester. A few weeks after attending the Leadership Conference, several of the members learned that the property located at 1250 Plain St., two blocks from campus, had previously been occupied by Theta Chi (whose chapter had closed in the fall of 1995). At that point, members who had been looking for housing for the growing colony began a search for information on the property, soon learning who owned the property, and some of its history. Social events for the semester included the 2nd Annual Disco Inferno date party, as well as Spring Formal.
