RODEO REUNION TO BRING PAST AND PRESENT ATHLETES TOGETHER
"Celebrating 60 years of Rodeo at NMSU"
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) Secretary Frank A. DuBois and Giles Lee, a member of the 1942 New Mexico State University (NMSU) rodeo team, will be sponsoring a rodeo reunion in Las Cruces on March 30, 2002. The reunion will consist of rodeo athletes dating back to 1942 and those who support college rodeo. The purpose of the reunion is to celebrate 60 years of NMSU rodeo athletics. "This is a great opportunity for NMSU rodeo athletes and anyone or everyone who has been involved with college rodeo to get together and have a good time," says DuBois.
The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) was created in 1949 with New Mexico as one of thirteen states participating in the charter year. The first NMSU rodeo club was organized in 1942 and then became inactive during World War II from 1943 to 1945. "When the war was over, we reactivated and reorganized the rodeo team. We built our first rodeo arena just south of the college," says Giles Lee of Lovington, New Mexico.
The reunion is scheduled around the NIRA Rodeo, which will be held on March 29-30, 2002. Those interested in supporting NMSU rodeo are encouraged to attend the reunion. Special presentations, dinner, and a dance will be included on the agenda.
