NMSU SENIOR RECLAIMS TOP SPOT IN CURRENT REGIONAL STANDINGS
Las Cruces, NM -- New Mexico State University senior from Moriarty, Koell Wright, dominated the breakaway roping event at the University ofArizona hosted NIRA rodeo. Wright won both go rounds with times of 5.3 and 4.3 seconds. Wright also placed third in the average of the barrel racing with a time of 37.77 seconds on two runs. "I wasn't happy with my previous performances in Florence, Arizona, so I was determined to do well in Tucson. My goal is to remain in good regional standings for a chance to compete in nationals," says Wright. Current regional standings place Wright in the number one seat in breakaway roping and third in barrel racing.
Other top performers include Andy Lake, a senior from Waterflow, New Mexico; John Pete Etcheverry, a junior from Carlsbad; and Buddy Robinson, a sophomore from Las Cruces. Lake placed third in the bull-riding average. Etcheverry won the first go round of the calf roping with a time of 10.2 seconds. Etcheverry and Robinson placed fourth in the first go round of the team roping event with a time of 8.9 seconds.
The next scheduled college rodeo for the Grand Canyon Region will be hosted by New Mexico State University on March 29-30, 2002, in Las Cruces.
