WRIGHT WINS BREAKAWAY ROPING AT NIRA RODEO
Snure Ties for First in Calf Roping
Las Cruces - New Mexico State University (NMSU) senior from Moriarty, Koell Wright, once again dominated the breakaway roping event on March 29-30, 2002, in Las Cruces. Wright won the average by placing second on the first go with a time of 4.7 seconds and placing first on the second go with a time of 3.8 seconds "I had pretty good performances both days. The competition is very tough with a couple of girls trailing right behind me, so I'll have to work hard to stay in first," says Wright. Wright is currently ranked first regionally and nationally in this event.
Bill Snure, a junior from Rodeo, New Mexico, tied for first in the calf roping average with a time of 20.4 seconds on two head. "I missed a rodeo to compete in a pro rodeo competition and I'm basically playing catch up to remain as a top contender," says Snure. He is currently ranked second in the region and eighth in the nation. Snure also placed fourth in the team roping average with a time of 28.1 seconds.
Other top performers include John Pete Etcheverry, Andy Lake, and Jarret Corn. Etcheverry, a sophomore from Carlsbad, placed second in the calf roping average with a time of 23.2 seconds. Lake, a senior from Waterflow, New Mexico, placed first in the bull riding event on Saturday resulting in third place in the average. Corn, a sophomore from Roswell, placed first in calf roping on the first day with a time of 10.5 seconds.
The next Grand Canyon Region rodeo hosted by Diné College is scheduled for April 6-7, 2002, in Farmington. For information on the NMSU Rodeo team, contact Chris Allison at (505) 646-1944.
