TWO-TIME “ALL-AROUND CHAMPION” COWGIRL TRANSFERS TO NMSU
Sproul Among the Best Female Rodeo Athletes in the Nation
Las Cruces New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture, Frank A. DuBois, has selected Mandy R. Sproul, a junior from Pearce, Arizona, as a recipient of the DuBois Rodeo Scholarship for the academic year 2002-2003. “Mandy is an excellent recruit for New Mexico State’s rodeo team. She brings an incredible amount of talent and a record of achievement,” says Secretary DuBois. Sproul says, “It is a real honor to be chosen for this scholarship and I hope to be a part of numerous championships in the future of NMSU.”
Sproul is a transfer student from Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona, where she attended her freshman and sophomore years on academic, basketball, and rodeo scholarships with an accumulative grade-point average of 3.89. She has been top female athlete in the Grand Canyon Region two years in a row, winning the “All-Around Championship” in 2001 and 2002. Sproul earned her title in 2002 by being the Champion Breakaway Roper and Barrel Racer as well as Reserve Champion Goat Tyer for the Grand Canyon Region. She also competes in team roping and recently qualified for the Collegiate National Finals Rodeo in all four events.
Sproul is a member of the Professional Women’s Rodeo Association (PWRA) where she was a finals qualifier in team roping and barrel racing in 2001. She won the PWRA average in team roping at that same competition. Most recently, she participated in the Ponoka Stampede in Canada and placed fourth in barrel racing.
During her high school years, Sproul was named Arizona High School’s 1997 Rookie of the Year, 1998 Champion Breakaway Roper, and 1999 Champion Goat Tyer. She qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo all four years.
Sproul’s parents are Robbie and Pam Sproul of Pearce, Arizona. She has two older brothers, Shane and Chad.
