NMSU Senior to Compete in Bull Riding

Las Cruces, NM -- New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture, Frank A. DuBois, has selected Andrew Edgar Lake, a senior from Waterflow, New Mexico, as a recipient of the DuBois Rodeo Scholarship for the academic school year 2001-2002. "Andy is a sharp individual academically, as well as in the rodeo arena. He is an ideal choice for the scholarship," says Secretary DuBois.

Lake transferred to New Mexico State University (NMSU) from New Mexico Junior College in the fall semester of 2000, where had a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0. As an NMSU student, he is maintaining a GPA of 3.9. "The scholarship allows you to focus on your studies instead of having to work additional hours to meet financial needs," says Lake. Lake is a member of the NMSU Rodeo Team. He also volunteers in organizations such as 4-H, Future Farmers of America (FFA), and Our Ranch San Juan Youth Program.

Lake graduated 6th in his class from Kirtland Central High School with a GPA of 3.9. He was a member of the honor society and Who's Who Among American High School Students. He was also a member of Valley Wrangler 4-H Club for nine years and of Kirtland FFA for four years.

Lake's rodeo accomplishments included qualifying for the National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSF) in 1997 and 1998. He was a member of the High School Rodeo Wrangler All-Star Team in 1998, New Mexico Junior College Rodeo Team from 1998 to 2000, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1998 and 1999, and the San Juan County 4-H Rodeo Club from 1994 to 1997.

Lake's parents are Robert and Linda Lake of Waterflow, New Mexico. He has one older brother named Robert Wayne, Jr. and two older sisters named LeAnn and Vickie.

Other scholarship recipients include Jessica Curtis, a sophomore from Roswell, New Mexico; James Green, a freshman from Socorro, New Mexico; and Bill Snure, a junior from Rodeo, New Mexico.
