NMSU CALF ROPER AND BARREL RACER PLACE FIRST
AT NIRA COMPETITION IN ALBUQUERQUE
Men's and Women's Teams Maintain Competitive Edge
Las Cruces - New Mexico State University calf roper, John Pete Etcheverry, and barrel racer, Koell Elaine Wright, placed first in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) competition on April 13-14, 2001, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Etcheverry, a freshmen from Carlsbad, placed first in the first go-round, third in the second go-round, and first in the average with a total time of 19.8 seconds in the calf roping event. Wright, a junior from Moriarty, placed first in the first go-round, third in the second go-round, and first in the average with a total time of 31.6 seconds. This placed Wright third in the Women's All-around for the competition. NMSU Rodeo Association president, Quentin Talbot, says, ANMSU was well represented at the NIRA rodeo in Albuquerque. With Frank DuBois' assistance on scholarships for rodeo athletes, our team will grow and become even more competitive.
In the team roping event, Annette Kay Hinkle, a junior from Tularosa, and Christian E. Sanchez, a senior from Grants, placed first in the second go-round and third in the average with a total time of 14.6 seconds. Hinkle also placed fourth in the first and second go-rounds in breakaway calf roping, and her total time of 8.4 seconds won second in the average.
After nine rodeos and as of April 17, 2001, NMSU men's team is in third place with 951 in total points and the NMSU women's team is in fourth place with 941 points. Koell E. Wright stands in fourth place with a total of 587 points in the Women's All-around. John P. Etcheverry stands in fifth place with a total of 402.5 points in the Men's All-around.
