NMSU Energy Conservation

joni newcomer, Project Manager at NMSU Facilities Planning + Construction, going to “USGBC Congressional Advocacy Day” in Washington DC

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization that certifies green and sustainable businesses, homes, hospitals, schools, and neighborhoods. USGBC is dedicated to expanding green building practices and education, and its LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™.

USGBC Congressional Advocacy Day seeks to enhance congressional understanding of green building practices, USGBC, and its chapters. This event is a unique opportunity to highlight the good work of our Chihuahuan Desert USGBC Chapter (Las Cruces and West Texas), to build relationships with members of Congress and staff, and to support sound green building policy at the federal level. Beginning in 2007, all of NMSU’s new buildings will be built to the second certification level (Silver) of the LEED rating system, as proposed by Governor Richardson in the 2006 Climate Change and Greenhouse Reduction Executive Order. NMSU is also a member of the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment.

Ms. newcomer, LEED Accredited Professional, will be going to Washington DC September 9th and 10th to meet with members of Congress and staff and promote sound green building policy at the federal level. This interaction will also provide skills to bring back and apply at state and local levels to help meet the governor’s Climate Change Initiative.
