Biographical Statement
James Payne earned his A.B. in English at Berkeley and his M.A. and Ph.D. in English at the University of California at Davis. A professor at New Mexico State, Payne has served as Senior Fulbright Lecturer in American Literature at Wroclaw University in Poland. He has served as chair of MELUS: The Society for the study of the Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States and was elected to the Advisory Council of the American Literature Section of the Modern Language Association. In 1995, Payne's participation in the Reconstructing American Literature Project at Yale University led to his being named a contributing editor to the Heath Anthology of American Literature, a teaching anthology which stems from the Reconstructing American Literature Project. A participant in the "Re-emergence of the Early Bakhtin" section of the "Working with Bakhtin Today" Penn State Summer Seminar in Theory and Culture, Payne was elected to the National Executive Committee of the Society for the Study of Southern Literature in 2001.
