Biographical Statement
I joined the English Department at New Mexico State University as an Assistant Professor in 2002, shortly after completing my doctorate at Yale. My primary research interests lie in the poetry and drama of the English Renaissance, with an emphasis on the intersection between literature and contemporary politics. A commitment to situating poetry and plays within their historical contexts unites my dissertation on seventeenth-century chronicle plays and my Oxford master's thesis on Milton's closet drama Samson Agonistes. In my present research, I am particularly concerned to suggest how late seventeenth-century history plays contribute in guarded ways to ongoing debates about good governance, the rights of subjects and sovereigns, and the constitution of the emergent English nation. My interest in the influence of rising nationalism in the drama of the period has fostered a secondary interest in its construction of the "Englishman" and "Englishwoman" as autonomous bourgeois subjects.

I believe that the examined life requires the examination of words. We inhabit a textual culture no longer limited by the printed word but as boundless as the internet itself. I am gratified to find myself in a field that both encourages students to analyze the texts, cultures, and discourses that surround them, and gives them the critical tools with which to do so.
