Biographical Statement
I earned an MA degree at NMSU. Besides teaching here, I have taught writing at Nashville Technical Institute, the University of Colorado at Denver, El Paso Community College and the University of Texas at El Paso. I have also worked as a freelance writer, commercial fisherman, truck driver and powder monkey. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy sea kayaking, sailing and free diving in tropical waters.
Courses Recently Taught
Typically, I teach English 203G (Business & Professional Communication) and English 218G (Technical & Scientific Communication). I also teach Southwestern Lit and an English 211 class that investigates how and why humans survive (or die) under extreme conditions.
Creative Interests
Although I've written and published short stories, and co-authored a full length play (produced and published), my primary creative interest over the past decade has been the writing of screenplays -- original movies based on my own concepts, or for motion picture projects that have been assigned to me. The feature-length movie Refuge (recently filmed in Las Cruces) is based on an original story that I co-authored with screenwriter/director Mark Medoff.
Professional Statement
Good writing is hard work. In my writing classes, I try to create a workshop environment where students can give and receive constructive criticism to help them improve and polish their manuscripts.
