The Colonias of Doña Ana County, New Mexico
by Greg Bloom, FNS Editor

Colonias are infrastructure-defficient neighborhoods inhabited mainly by Spanish speakers, mostly from Mexico, and located in one of the four US states that border Mexico. Colonias in the US, by definition, lack some or all of the following: water and sewer systems, gas lines, paved roads and safe housing. In New Mexico, the southern county of Doña Ana has 40,531 of the state's 70,000+ colonia residents. Nearly all of these colonia residents lack access to natural gas, wastewater treatment and adequate housing.

"Mariposas offers flexible hours and work at home and this provides a sense of well being for any mother who is alert to the needs of her children. A mother can be economically sound and she can raise her children with strong values and earn a living at the same time. It is truly enriching. And empowering!"
