Problems with Testimony of Witness in Juárez Serial-Killings Cases Threatens Prosecution's Position

Laura Guereca Arroyo, a key witness in the case against two Ciudad Juárez bus drivers, recently told El Norte newspaper that she never confirmed to prosecutors that arrested bus driver Víctor García Uribe was the man she saw changing a tire near the field where eight bodies were found in early November, 2001. Due to her involvement in the case, Guereca has been afraid to leave her home and, at one point, took a one month leave of abcence from work.

Lawyer for Suspect in Juárez Murder Cases Dies in Police Chase

Mario César Escobedo Anaya, the defense lawyer for Gustavo González Meza, one of two men accused of murdering eleven women in Ciudad Juárez, was killed in a police chase on Tuesday, February 5, 2002. The state police officers involved in the chase have been put on paid leave while Escobedo's death is investigated. Some of the current questions surrounding the case include whether or not Escobedo was shot and killed after his car crashed and whether police shot their own vehicle to make it look as if they were shot by Escobedo.

Death Threats Against Casa Amiga Director?

While the director of Casa Amiga, Esther Chávez Cano, has said that a government employee has warned her for her own safety to stop being so outspoken for women's issues in Ciudad Juárez, she does not define the warning as a death threat as was reported in the Cd. Juárez media. This article also examines the still unresolved murder of the Center's receptionist and the Center's continued funding problems.
