When examining the question of why women currently living in Matamoros and Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas decided to give birth to their children in the US, Colef researchers Cueva and Vásquez looked at a number of explanations including future plans for the family to immigrate to the US, the quality of US medical services, and future educational and economic opportunities for their children in the United States. Their conclusions suggest that the most prevalent reason why Mexican women give birth in the US is not to take advantage of medical benefits or just to simply gain citizenship for their children (as the US media often suggests) but to give their children the right to possibly take advantage of a US high-school or university education.
