The
El Paso Museum of Art
by Greg Bloom, FNS Editor
The El Paso Museum of Art originated around a donation
of 13th century to 18th century art from the Kress Collection,
which assistant curator Ann Camp describes as a "wonderful
cornerstone in an art history sense." However, chronicling
the history of art is not the museum's main intent. The mission
of the museum, according to Camp, is to attract people and help
them understand art. Attending an art museum can at times be
seen as a lofty experience reserved for elites but the El Paso
Museum of Art works in a number of ways to bring in the city's
diverse population, says Camp.
The
US Border Patrol Museum & Memorial Library
by Greg Bloom, FNS Editor
Located in a Chihuahuan Desert setting
at the bottom of El Paso's Franklin Mountains, the US Border
Patrol Museum and Memorial Library was started through the efforts
of retired Border Patrol agents. Filled with artifacts like guns
and a helicopter from the organization's past, the museum attempts
to tell the history of the Border Patrol.
A
New Mexican Journalist in New York City
by Greg Bloom, FNS Editor
FNS Editor Greg Bloom had been to
New York City many times in the 1990s but after the events of
September 11, 2001, memories of these trips were replaced by
images of the attack on the World Trade Center and the final
collapse of the towers. Deciding to go ahead with travel plans
made before the attack, Bloom found that being in New York City
allowed him to recover much of what the city had previously meant
to him. His visit also permitted him to gain a new image of the
city, one which contains both the city's fresh wounds and its
cultural significance.
