During the summer of 2002 I worked on a project to better understand the geology of the "South Anyui Suture Zone" in central Chukotka, northeastern Russia. This was a collaborative project with scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow and Magadan. Funding was provided by the Russian Academy and by Stanford University Department of Geological Sciences. This web page shows some of the photos that I took during this field season. Each page is approximately 1 Mb in size, so if you are viewing with a modem click on the alternate page with thumbnails. Otherwise dive in.

Chukotka 2002

Click to enlarge the map that shows where this project took place. I flew from El Paso to Anchorage to Petropavlovsk to Magadan to Bilibino. From Bilibino, we traveled by track vechicle on the counterclockwise loop shown. This map also shows where I was working on Seward Peninsula (1990-1994), St. Lawrence Island (1994), Koolen Lake in Chukotka (1994), and the Chegitun River (1995).
