May 26, 2004 [top]

1. The Gila hike date has been moved to July 17-18.

2. More information is being collected for the Puerto Peñasco trip June 25-27.

3. Meetings will now be held on Tuesdays @ 5:30pm. The next location is Chili’s on Lohman and Telshor.

May 19, 2004 [top]

1. A template for events and activities will be made so members can make suggestions and we can plan accordingly.   

2. More members need to take the driving defense course to be able to drive the Geography van. Also, we need to purchase a first aid kit for out outings.  

3. Upcoming field trips are: the Gila Hike overnight trip (Aug. 14-15), Puerto Peñasco (June 25-27), and Dripping Springs hike (this Saturday the 22nd).  

4. We voted on a name change for the Geography Club, and the new name is “Geography United: Experience the World.”

April 28, 2004 [top]

1. The Gila Hike has been moved to the summer. Instead, there will be a Geography Club BBQ at Young’s Park on May 1st at 1pm. The BBQ essentials will be provided, and anything more will have to be brought.  

2. The undergraduates need to find more information about community service hours needed for the ASNMSU grant. Someone needs to email Jon about that.

3. There is an undergrad river cleanup that will last approximately 3 hours (9am-12pm). Meet Sunday at the co-op at 9am.

4. Meetings will be held off-campus during the summer. Next meeting will be at Farley’s!

April 21, 2004 [top]

1. Earth Day Bake Sale! The Geography Club will hold a bake sale Thursday (April 22nd) and start at 8am in front of the Dean's office in Breland Hall. Bring items to sell and sign up for a few hours during the day. The bake sale will end around 1pm.

2. Field Trips! The Lake Lucero trip is cancelled, but we will be camping at Aguirre Springs on April 24th. This will be an overnight trip with food and beverages provided.

3. Gilas. Gila hike on May 1st. This is a day trip only. More details later on.

1. Earth Day Bake Sale! The Geography Club will hold a bake sale Thursday (April 22nd) and start at 8am in front of the Dean's office in Breland Hall. Bring items to sell and sign up for a few hours during the day. The bake sale will end around 1pm.

2. Community Service-Aggie Day. Aggie Day is April 17th and community service hours are available for the taking-both off-campus and on-campus. We need volunteers! We also need to make a new board with Geography Club, Geography Department, LESA, & SPARC Lab propaganda.

3. Field Trips! Chiricahua National Monument overnight trip is April 17th. Lake Lucero field trip is April 24th. After visting Lake Lucero, we will camp overnight at Aguirre Springs.

4. Gilas. Gila hike on May 1st. This is a day trip only. More details later on.

1. Earth Day Bake Sale! The Geography Club will hold a bake sale Thursday (April 22nd) to raise money for future trips and events. In the morning, the bake sale will occur in Breland (near the courtyard) and migrate to the east entrance of Corbett Center. There we will bands and other groups doing similar activities for Earth Day.

2. Community Service-Aggie Day. Aggie Day is April 17th and community service hours are available for the taking-both off-campus and on-campus. We will possible have a booth to promote our club. Marc will have more details as they materialize.

3. Field Trips! The Sonoran Desert trip is this weekend. This is an overnight trip on April 10th. Chiricahua National Monument overnight trip is April 17th. The last day to tell me is next meeting (April 7th). Lake Lucero field trip is April 24th.

4. Otero Mesa Day. Otero Mesa went well. The slide show and commentary were awesome! Rusty and Marcos from the BLM came by and gave a different perspective to the mix. It was very informative and peaceful. We should do another field trip there before the well plans overtake the area.

5. We need to update the Geography Display board and jazz it up some. It needs a little more excitement. But at least we have one now, thanks Trent!

6. Member dues. It’s that time again- to pay dues! It is $5 and goes to the club for future trips/events.

7. NMGIC. NM Geographic Information Council. Their 20th anniversary is coming up and having their semi-annual meeting in Albuquerque, NM. They will pay for gas and provide lunch. We just pay for the registration fee. We can carpool in the geog van. Go here http://nmgic.unm.edu/ for more information. Annual dues are $10 for students. That gets you in the door as well.

1. Bake Sale! The Geography Club will hold a bake sale Monday (March 15th) to raise money for David Pendergrass, our fellow geographer, who needs our help. A sign up sheet will be posted on the geography office door. Two people need to be present throughout the day. Sign up for at least one hour and put your name down if you will donate any items. The list is updated. Please donate if you cannot attend. Eric and Jon will help setup Monday morning. There will be pizza cards as a side fundraiser at the bake sale. Eric has more information on that ejd715@yahoo.com. We also need to make a banner for the bake sale. Let’s get together!

2. Community Service-Hillsboro Apple Rally. The bike race needs volunteers to help with clean-up, registration, and court marshalling. On-campus hours are available Saturday March 13th and off-campus hours are available Sunday March 14th. For more information, please email Jon Czerniak at jczernia@nmsu.edu.

4. Community Service-Keep Las Cruces Beautiful. Keep Las Cruces Beautiful is an opportunity to obtain community service hours and receive money. Last Sunday went well and the club suggested doing it again.

5. The Sonoran Desert field trip is the most popular field trip among the members at the meeting. A poll was created to vote for a day to have the field trip on. Please vote. Attend the meeting Wednesday if you still want to do the other field trips. If you cannot attend, please tell Marc, Eric, or Jon.

6. Otero Mesa Day. Otero Mesa Day is March 31st in the Corbett Center from 8:30am to 4pm. Snacks will be provided. There will be a slideshow of pictures, a video of the area, several speakers, and more! We need some volunteers to help promote the club at this event, but please attend at the bare minimum. We need to keep our wild places wild. Show your support by attending some events at Otero Mesa Day in Corbett. We need to make a presentation board to advertise the geog club. We could also use this for Aggie Day.

1. Meeting Time. The meeting time is changed back to weekly meetings for the time being. The next meeting is Wednesday March 10, 2004.

2. Bake Sale! The Geography Club will hold a bake sale next Monday (March 15th) to raise money for David Pendergrass, our fellow geographer, who needs our help. Tessa will call his wife, Laura, for other details, but we need volunteers for the event. A sign up sheet will be posted on the geography office door. Two people need to be present throughout the day. Sign up for at least one hour and put your name down if you will donate any items. More details will come at the next meeting.

3. Community Service-Aggie Day. Aggie Day is April 17th and community service hours are available for the taking-both off-campus and on-campus. We will possible have a booth to promote our club. Marc will have more details as they materialize.

5. Community Service-Keep Las Cruces Beautiful. Keep Las Cruces Beautiful is an opportunity to obtain community service hours and receive money. Just as the title says, we will help clean Las Cruces and do it twice! The first day, this Sunday, is to raise money for David Pendergrass. The second day, still to be determined, will benefit the club. We will meet at 10am at the usual spot in the courtyard outside Breland 185.

6. Soledad Canyon. Pictures of the hike will be available on the website beginning of next week, if not sooner. Everyone had a great time!

7. Upcoming Field Trips. Trinity Site field trip is April 3, 2003. Lake Lucero field trip is April 24, 2004. A date for the Sonoran Desert field trip is still needed. A Yahoo! Poll will be sent so we can vote that way. Possible dates will be sent in the poll. More details at the next meeting.

8. Otero Mesa Day. Otero Mesa Day is March 31st in the Corbett Center from 8:30am to 4pm. Snacks will be provided. 1. New Meeting Time. We will meet every OTHER Wednesday. There is some opposition discussed after the meeting, so we will revisit this at the next meeting. The next meeting is Wednesday March 3, 2004.

2. Pictures. We need pictures from the river clean up to put on the website. If anyone has any, please email me at ucsblzygrll@yahoo.com, thanks!

3. Community Service Hours. Trent sent an email to everyone regarding community service hours. This is important to the undergraduate members! You can earn $500 for the group by doing community service. If you’re interested, sign up on the sheet outside Breland 185. We will send out an email soon regarding this issue.

4. Fundraiser. Earth Day is Thursday April 22, 2004! This is a great opportunity to promote Geography Awareness/Environmental Awareness and raise money at the same time. We will discuss possible fundraising activities at the next meeting. A bake sale was mentioned, but nothing in stone yet.

5. Otero Mesa Day. Sometime in March there will be an information day about Otero Mesa. This is in collaboration with the SOE. We might need volunteers to help out. Who can pass up free food and a movie! We will discuss the details when more information is available.

6. Hike This Saturday! We are still meeting this Saturday outside Breland 185 in the courtyard for a hike to Soledad Canyon. Bring anything you might need- jacket, hat, water, snack, camera, etc.

7. Upcoming Field Trips. Trinity Site field trip is April 3, 2003. Lake Lucero field trip is April 24, 2004. A date for the Sonoran Desert field trip is still needed. A Yahoo! Poll will be sent so we can vote that way. Possible dates will be sent in the poll. More details at the next meeting.

8. Club Committees. The first part of the meeting will be reviewing old business and discussing new business. During the second part, the club will break into the separate committees (fundraiser and activities) and discuss appropriate issues.

1. Elected Officers. For the graduate part of the club: President-Marc, Vice President-Eric, Treasurer-Trent, Secretary-Jen. For the undergraduate part: President- Jon, Vice President-Diana, Treasurer-Stephan, Secretary-Melissa.

2. Field Trips. On the agenda is a hiking trip to Soledad Canyon on Feb. 21st at noon. We will meet outside Breland 185 in the courtyard (where the skateboarders like to hang out). This is outside Breland between 185 and 182.

3. Proposed field trips. Lake Lucero, the Trinity Site, and the Sonoran Desert (April?) are future trips that just need dates. Next meeting (2/18) we will decide the dates and plan future trips!

4. Promoting. Diana will update the fliers around campus this upcoming week. We need to think about fundraisers and other stuff for the club as well.

February 5, 2004: [top]

1. Slide show. Trent presented a slide show on our field trip to Otero Mesa and the trip to the publich hearing in Albuquerque to keep Otero Mesa wild. If you missed this and would like to see it, then maybe Trent could do it again? Next meeting we can decide.

2. Nominations. With the low turn out today, not very many people were nominated. But, Mark Bourdon was nominated for president and Eric Dust was nominated for vice president. Officer positions need to be filled for BOTH graduate and undergraduate clubs.

3. Election. The election for officers is next week. We ask that ALL active members please come and have a say in who gets elected. EVERYONE is invited, and there are NO hard feelings among the project lab crowd. Like I said, EVERYONE IS INVITED! So, please come and participate/run for office.

7. Meeting minutes. Once this is emailed to the group, it is posted outside Breland 185 (In case anyone would like to know).

8. Promoting. Please help in promoting the Geography Club. It is the only way we can grow! Please announce our club in geography classes and spread the word! The more the merrier.
