Dr. G. Jay Gogue

 

Dr. G. Jay Gogue became New Mexico State University's 20th president on July 1, 2000. He came to New Mexico State University from Utah State University where he had served as provost since 1995.

 

Gogue (rhymes with "rouge") was vice president for research at Clemson University in South Carolina from 1988 to 1995, and also served as vice president and vice provost for agriculture and natural resouces at Clemson. Other prior academic experience was a professor at Texas A & M university in 1976-1977. Utah State University, Clemson and Texas A & M are land-grant universities like NMSU.

 

Dr. Gogue began his professional career in 1973 as a research scientist with the U.S. Department of Interior. From 1977 to 1986, he was chief scientist fro the National Park Service, leading scientific programs involving professionals from the biological physical and behavioral sciences. He has served on numerous academic and government boards and committees on the local, state and national level.

 

Dr. Gogue, a native of Waycross, GA, received a doctorate in horticulture from Michigan State University in 1973 and bachelor's and master's degrees in horticulture from Auburn University in 1969 and 1970. He and his wife, Susie, have three children: Jason, Alison and Barrett.
