Dr. Jerry Ann Alt is Director of Choirs and Professor of Music at New
Mexico State University where she conducts three choirs and teaches
undergraduate and graduate conducting. She has conducted large-scale
choral works with the Las Crucrs Symphony Orchestra and opera with the
Dona Ana Lyric Opera. In May 2001, NMSU Choirs sang a mass at San Marcos
in Venice as part of a twelve-day concert tour of Italy. In May 1998,
this same group performed a tour of southern Italy, which included
performances at the Vatican, and major cathedrals of Florence and Siena.
Other international performances include an evening service at
Westminster Abbey, the Josquin "Missa Pange Lingua" at St. Stephen's
Cathedral in Vienna, Austria and the Mozarr "Solemn Vespers" at the
Cathedral of Siquenza in Spain.
In 2000 Dr. Alt and Dr. Fant, music department chair, wrote a grant to New
Mexico Arts. Consequently about $10,000 was awarded to the music
department and resulted in a tour combing University Singers and Symphonic
Winds. Dr. Alt debuted at Carnegie Hall in April 1990 with a 200 voice all
New Mexico high school choir. Under her direction, University Singers has
performed at three consecutive regional conventions of the American Choral
Directors Association in Denver, Dallas and Corpus Christi. A compact
disk featuring the music of Josquin and Brahms and recorded during a 1992
performance at Christkirche Munchen am Dom-Pedro-Platz in Munich, Germany
is available.
Dr. Alt received the Docrorate of Choral Music from Arizona State
University where she srudied with Douglas McEwen. She received the
Masters of Music Education from Loyola University in New Orleans. Prior
to her work at NMSU, Dr. Alt taught at Delta State University in
Cleveland, Mississippi for three years and high schools in Louisiana for
eight years. She is a life member of ACDA.
