  • 2002-2004
    Joined the faculty of California State University, Chico in August 2002 at the rank of professor and as chair of the Department of History for a two year appointment.   International issues columnist for the Donga Ilbo, Seoul, Korea.                                                                  

  • 1980-2002     
    Joined the faculty of New Mexico State University in August 1980 at the rank of
    Visiting Assistant Professor of History for a two year appointment.  Promoted to
    Assistant Professor in August 1982, to Associate Professor in August 1987, and
    to Professor of History in August 1992.  Earned tenure in August 1988.  Retired at the rank of Emeritus Professor of History in August 2002.                                                                  

  • 1990 
    Graduate Institute of Peace Studies, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Korea,      Distinguished Visiting Scholar, two month appointment.
                   

  • 1988-1989
    University of Southern California, Visiting Associate Professor of History, one year appointment.

    Received Doctor of Philosophy degree in History at the University of Virginia in  August 1977.  One year replacement appointments at the University of Texas at
    Arlington, California State College, Bakersfield, and Glenville State College (West Virginia).  One semester replacement appointment at Delaware State College.  
                                                        

  • 1973-1975                              
    Full time graduate student at the University of Virginia.  Major field of study was  American history from the colonial period to the present.  Special field of study was American diplomatic history.  Minor fields included Recent American history,  Russian history, and Soviet diplomatic history.  Dissertation analyzed American foreign policy in Korea from 1941 to 1950.  

  • 1971-1973            
    Full time graduate student at the University of Virginia.  Received Master of Arts degree in June 1973.  Master’s thesis was an investigation of Sino-American relations from 1958 to 1968 from the Chinese perspective. 

  • 1970-1971            
    Joined the Illinois National Guard in February 1970 and spent four months on active duty.  Transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve in August 1971. 

  • 1966-1970            
    Received Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Lake Forest College in June1970.  Senior thesis dealt with Soviet-American relations from 1917 to 1935

Teaching Experience:

  • At California State University, Chico, have taught an undergraduate senior reading seminar.  
  • At New Mexico State University, taught graduate seminars in U.S. Foreign Relations and Imperialism in Asia, U.S. history survey, U.S. Foreign Relations, the Era of Roosevelt, Recent American History, Historiography and Research Methodology, the Korean War, East Asia history survey, and an honors course on the Vietnam War.  At the University of Southern California, taught War and the American Experience, U.S. diplomatic history, and the Vietnam War.  
  • At the University of Texas at Arlington, taught U.S. history survey and U.S. diplomatic history.  
  • At California State College, Bakersfield, taught U.S. history survey, U.S. diplomatic history, Twentieth Century America, and a freshman seminar on the Cold War. 

     
  • At Glenville State College, taught U.S. history survey, World Cultures from the origins of man to the present, U.S. diplomatic history, American national government, and a television course in African-American history.  At Delaware State College, taught courses in World Civilizations from 1650 to the present and Russian history before 1825.  Teaching assistant at the University of Virginia in both  American and Russian history.
