Political Theory

Political theory involves the systematic exploration of ideas concerning the best or ideal society, particularly as these ideas form the basis for actual states and their laws. Political theory originated in the ancient world, especially of in the writings of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Their method of analyzing the proper foundation for the good society is carried forward into the modern period by such classic authors as Machiavelli, Locke, Rousseau, Marx, and Nietzsche. These thinkers saw themselves as struggling to bring forth the truth about human beings that would make possible the creation of a new political order. It is from these theoretical sources that the most fundamental concepts which continue to inform our own understanding of political order are ultimately derived. Political theory, therefore, enables us to understand the nature of the civilization we have inherited by analyzing the ideas and principles on which it is based.

The student who takes seriously the study of the great thinkers and books of the Western political tradition is well prepared for career success. Like other liberal arts or humanities majors, students of political theory develop excellent analytical, writing, and problem-solving skills, making them ideal candidates for post- graduate studies (in law, political science, and other disciplines) and for careers in business, politics, and education.
