Public Administration
Public Administration deals with administration and implementation of public policy in a variety of public service agencies. Today's public sector workforce is changing rapidly. Privatization, reinvention, budget cuts, devolution and the rise in non-profit organizations are affecting the way in which public organizations operate. To do any of these jobs well, individuals need to understand aspects of organization, internal management, personnel systems, budget and finance, and policy making.
Students interested in helping their neighbors and working with others may wish to explore the Public Administration sub-field. Public administrators include those with titles such as Policy Analyst, Director of Parks and Recreation, Chief Planner, City Manager, Public Works Manager, Budget Analyst, Economic Development Director, Police Chief, or Director of a Nonprofit Organization. Courses within this sub-field introduce students to the knowledge and skills essential for challenging positions in public and nonprofit organizations.
