Public Law

Public Law examines court processes, substantive legal areas, and the intersection between law and society. Classes may require students to write legal briefs, make law-based arguments or conduct legal research. Public Law is one of the older sub-fields of political science (in fact, it has been taught at NMSU for more than a century). Yet it is also very dynamic and contemporary, reflecting the most current legal debates and political issues of the day, from Internet censorship to presidential impeachment.

Public law courses can provide a solid academic background for students who are interested in graduate or law school, or who plan to work in law-related careers. Courses examine issues of New Mexico law, U.S. Constitutional law, civil liberties, sex-based discrimination and international law.
