Comparative Politics

Comparative Politics examines political systems of countries around the world. In recent years there have been many dramatic political events, such as the collapse of the Soviet Union, the reunification of Germany, the end of apartheid in South Africa and the ongoing struggles for democracy in Mexico and Latin America. Everyday our news is filled with stories of political conflict in countries that we often know very little about.

Comparative Politics goes beyond the headlines to find out how different governments work, what causes them to maintain or lose power, and how such changes have an impact across national borders. It also helps us learn about the variety of ways in which different governments and societies deal with global issues, such as poverty, racial discrimination, migration, development and human rights.

Given the rapid pace of change, and the fact that our nations are more inter-connected than ever before, there is an urgent need for individuals with a strong background in Comparative Politics. This sub-field prepares students with the skills necessary for understanding and communicating the significance of political developments in other countries. These skills are increasingly in demand in such as areas as government, law, business, education, advocacy and the media.
