What is a Living Learning Community?

photos of NMSU

Living Learning Communities (LLC) at New Mexico State University create an educational atmosphere in the residence halls that allows students living on campus to transition seamlessly between their academic and residential environments. LLC students interact with faculty, participate in programs that bridge the gap between coursework and friendship, enjoy a strong feeling of connection to the campus community, and have a shared Living/Learning experience with other students who have similar interests and goals.

Students participating in a Living Learning Community live in the same area of a residence hall or apartment community and are given frequent opportunities to interact with other students, academic staff, and faculty who share common academic or personal interests. There is no extra fee to live in an LLC and students do not have to be pursuing a degree in the College or Department that sponsors the LLC they choose.

LLCs are vibrant, active communities where students can explore their interests in depth with others who share their interests and have the added benefit of interacting with and learning from the Key Partners who work with the communities. Each LLC is unique with a personality and flavor all its own. Students who choose to live in LLCs want the most out of their experience at NMSU and hail from a diverse variety of backgrounds, academic disciplines, and life experiences.

Living Learning Community Descriptions for Fall 2008

The AGRICULTURE AND HOME ECONOMICS Living Learning Community offers students the opportunity to participate in activities that reflect the many majors and career choices within the College of Agriculture and Home Economics. Some recent community programs include Chili Pepper Tasting sponsored by NMSU's Chili Pepper Institute, a horticultural hike in the Organ Mountains, and workshop on overcoming test anxiety.

The BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES Living Learning Community is a great destination for students interested in topics, majors, and careers in the fields of biology, premedical and pre-health studies, biomedical sciences, conservation ecology, and biochemistry. In the past, this community has enjoyed a stress relief program, learned from experts what's portrayed accurately and inaccurately in popular forensic science shows, and formed study groups to help students succeed.

The BUSINESS Living Learning Community is an ideal setting for students interested in topics, majors, and careers related to business. The opportunities for activities and discussions in this LLC are as diverse as the students living here and can range from marketing to economics to international business and beyond. In the past, this LLC has offered presentations by successful NMSU alumni, a game based on the stock market, and discussions of majors and careers in Business. The possibilities are endless!

* The C.A.M.P. (College Assistance Migrant Program) Living Learning Community is open to students admitted to the C.A.M.P. program at NMSU. This program allows students from migrant communities to have a comprehensive college experience complete with academic support. Please visit website address for requirements for living in this community.

The CRIMINAL JUSTICE Living Learning Community is a great place for students interested in any of the facets of the criminal justice system to explore topics, majors, and careers related to this growing field. Some recent activities in the Criminal Justice LLC include making connections with the Criminal Justice Honor Society and partnering with the Biological Sciences LLC to hear from experts what popular legal shows get right and wrong.

The EDUCATION Living Learning Community offers students the opportunity to explore themes and issues related to majors and careers in education. The possibilities for activities and discussion topics are widely varied and allow students to learn more about all aspects of the education field. Residents of this community have had personalized advising sessions, learned about "haunted" campus history, and heard from experts how to stay ahead in college.

The ENGINEERING Living Learning Community is a great setting for students interested in topics, majors, and careers related to the many fields of study within the College of Engineering. This LLC encourages its residents to connect with role models and helps them learn to balance their academic demands while enjoying the college experience. In the past, residents of the Engineering LLC have used aerodynamics to build the perfect airplane, learned how to view everything (even popular dancing video games) through the eyes of an engineer, and had private calculus review sessions to help them succeed.

* The FIRST YEAR SCHOLARS Cluster/Living Learning Community offers students who are enrolled in the First Year Scholars program at NMSU the opportunity to live together and enjoy the benefits of academic success. Students living in this LLC will have personalized attention from faculty.

The FINE ARTS Living Learning Community encourages students with an interest in Fine Arts to live with others who share their passion. Some of this LLC's residents are pursuing majors and careers in Fine Arts, while others are interested in the sensory, creative, and aesthetic pleasures of the arts. Because of this diversity, possibilities for activities and discussion topics are unlimited.

The GLOBAL VILLAGE is a place where graduate and undergraduate international students and domestic students interested in topics such as study abroad and international business will feel at home. This community encourages its residents to take a global perspective and explore study abroad, international themes, and diversity.

The GRADUATE CLUSTER is a place where graduate students can feel at home while enjoying the convenience of living on campus. Because graduate students have different academic and social needs from traditional undergraduates, the Graduate Cluster is located in one of our apartment communities and is open only to graduate students. This community is designed to offer an ideal environment for our diverse graduate community.

The HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES Living Learning Community offers students interested in the many topics, majors, and careers related to Health and Social Services to come together and share their common interest. Because there is a diverse range of themes relevant to Health and Social Services, the possibilities for activities and discussions are unlimited. In the past, students living in this LLC have learned from experts what medical shows get right and wrong, received personalized help in navigating registration, heard from an inspiring faculty member about world health, and formed study groups to help each other succeed.

* The HONORS RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE is a holistic residential Living Learning environment for students who are members of the Honors College at NMSU, the only one of its kind in New Mexico. This vibrant and active community engages students in lively discussion, offers the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, and fosters a close-knit community that makes a large campus feel smaller. Members of this community enjoy a strong focus on academic excellence and a connection to campus through interaction with faculty. Please visit website address for requirements for living in this community.

The PRE-PHARMACY Living Learning Community gives students interested in majors and careers related to pharmacology the chance to socialize and study with others who share their ambitions.
