A democratic way of organizing things...
The mind set:
- People possess multiple skill sets and are able to cover several different jobs if needed...
- We seek to balance the needs of the work (technical system) and the doers of the work (social system)...
- People are learners, and their skills can be profitably developed...
- Machines and information systems can extend the productivity of a capable learner...
- Organizational design is based on specifying as little as necessary and leaving the rest to the skill and discretion of the worker...
- Complex jobs in a simple work environment...
- The building block is a self-managing work team...
- Cooperative structures, processes and reward systems are the most effective way to produce higher quality and performance.
The democratic design principle...Coordination and control of work tasks is done by those doing the work.
People act as if:
- Everyones ideas are taken seriously...
- Success comes from sensing trends and initiating change rather than putting out fires...
- Outcomes are best reached with flexibility built into the approach...
- I am fully responsible for any work I agree to perform...
- Making our assumptions explicit and exploring them is worth the temporary discomfort...
- Every task is part of some larger whole (I can't win at your expense)...
- Skepticism and doubt are valued as they foster continuous learning...
- Everyone supports paying great attention to adapting the quality of the worklife, work processes, goods and services produced to the everchanging market.
