NMSU Participates in Chihuahua Wind Energy Forums

The New Mexico State University NSF wind energy team participated in the first ever bi-national wind energy forum on the Border sponsored by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The NMSU wind team has been supporting the NSF with evaluation of wind energy development potential for Mexican ejidos (communal farms). The Border wind forum was conducted as two events in both Chihuahua and Ciudad Juárez, and were organized by the UNDP, the Global Environment Facility, State Government of Chihuahua, and the Instituto de Investigaciones Eléctricas and held at the ITESM and UACJ campuses, respectively.

On November 16 Martin Gomez of the Institute for Energy and the Environment (IEE - College of Engineering) presented at the two day UNDP sponsored solar and wind energy workshop held at the Instituto Technologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) – Campus Chihuahua.  ITESM is a partner with NMSU on Borderland wind energy development. He presented solar and wind energy fundamentals, as well as results from the NMSU study on wind for Mexican ejidos. The event was also co-sponsored by the Departamento de Electrificación y Ahorro de Energía and the Centro Regional de Producción más Limpia.

On November 17, Robert Foster(IEE) and NMSU student Jacqueline Sanchez presented at the UNDP Foro Fronterizo de Generación EoloEléctrica held on the UACJ campus in Ciudad Juárez. Representatives from pertinent agencies and companies from Mexico City, Austin, Morelos, Nuevo Leon, and across Chihuahua participated. The NMSU NSF wind team discussed Borderland wind energy development. Jackie Sanchez presented on the potential environmental impacts of windfarms. Robert Foster focused on lessons learned from New Mexico windfarms and how these might apply in Mexico.
