NSF New Mexico-Chihuahua Partnership for Innovation Fourth General Partners Conference, February 2008

The last general meeting for NM-Chihuahua Partnership for Innovation was held in Los Alamos-Santa Fe, NM on February 21-23, 2008. The students and coordinators of each project got together to present their findings.

Dr. Elmer Salazar welcomed the group at the Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos, NM, where leaders on the technology field, Dr. Duncan McBranch and Dr. John Mott gave explanations of the Museum and highlighted its importance on U.S. history. The Bradbury Science Museum is nationally and internationally recognized by the top secret Manhattan Project. A presentation of the Los Alamos History was given by the laboratory historian, Dr. Alan Carr.

Los Alamos Research Park was the second stop of the tour; where members of the Los Alamos National Laboratory presented all the new technologies in the development stage at the laboratory to the partners. Topics included: LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory) Fuel Cell Program, High Temperature Superconductivity Center and a brief overview of LANL technical programs.

In between the presentations, the laboratory offered a lunch to students and staff, allowing all attendees to discuss and share their thoughts and ideas on issues that arose during the course of the conference. A windshield tour of Los Alamos and LANL was given by Buffalo Tours allowing all participants to witness first hand the city sights and to better understand the workings of the Manhattan project.

At the Sage Inn Hotel in Santa Fe, the students explained the outcomes of their project and it concluded with a dinner, providing all those involved a chance to discuss the days’ events. On Friday, some students took the option to ski at the Santa Fe Ski Basin.
