French Course Descriptions:  Fall 2008
 
Students who have already taken some French courses  are encouraged to take the French Placement Exam ( available at the Languages & LInguistics webpage) in order to be placed at the correct level.
 
FREN 111.  Elementary French I  (4 credits)
Introduction to French language as well as to French and francophone cultures. Emphasis on development of communicative competence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.  FREN 111 is a course for beginners.
 
FREN 112.  Elementary French II (4 credits)
This course complements and follows FREN 111.  Students will continue to expand their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.  Class activities will include compositions and oral interviews.  Students will continue with the same textbooks used in FREN 111.
Prerequisite:  C or better in FREN 111.
 
FREN 211.   Intermediate French I (3 credits)
This third semester course is designed to develop students’  abilities in speaking, listening, reading and writing at a more advanced level. The course includes a review of grammar and  an introduction to the reading of various cultural and literary texts. 
Prerequisite:  C or better in FREN 112.
  
FREN 212.   Intermediate French II (3 credits)
This course complements and follows FREN 211. Students will continue with the same textbooks used in 211.
 
FREN 325.  Intermediate French Conversation (3 credits)
The main purpose of this course is to develop the intermediate student's ability to understand and speak French.  The class will focus on small-group guided discussions which are designed to increase fluency, improve pronunciation and expand vocabulary.  Class materials consist of  contemporary texts and visual materials about French and Francophone cultures.
Prerequisite:  FREN 212 or consent of Instructor
 
FREN 365g  Perspectives in French Culture  (3 credits)
Subtitled:  France:  The Occupation Years—1940-1945
This course looks at life in France during the French Occupation from the perspective of a native witness.  Materials for the course include historical and literary texts as well as films.  The course will be taught in English.  French majors can receive credit for the course after completing  a certain amount of the work in French.
 
FREN 381.  Survey of French Literature I
This course    is a survey of French literature from its beginning to the end of
the 18th century.  This class discusses the major authors, literary texts
and schools during this time span.  This class will consist of lectures,
personal basic research, discussion, reading of literary excerpts, and use
of multimedia sources to enhance the discovery of the literature of these
times.
Prerequisite:  FREN 212 or consent of instructor
