Serving up Albuquerque

Behind the scenes at The Frontier

The Frontier restaurant has served Albuquerque and the UNM community since February 10th, 1971.  I chose to photograph the Frontier because its atmosphere is unlike any other restaurant I have ever known. Its character comes from the unique style and decoration of the building, as well as the fact that it is a historical gathering place for every type of person found on the planet. In this documentary, I wanted to reveal the place’s character that is found “behind the scenes,” as well as the character found in the dining area.

Because I was welcomed into the kitchen, I was able to show a side of the restaurant that is not usually seen.  All kitchens are hot and stressful, but the workers at the Frontier joked and laughed with each other even when they were overwhelmingly busy. Several of them have worked there for over 20 years, and it shows that they feel at home there. The customers feel at home there as well.  Many that I spoke with have been loyal “Frontierers” since the restaurant’s opening.
I hope that I have conveyed a little of this unique place’s character – both behind the scenes and in front.
