GEORGE DEFOE, KEN VAN WINKLE TRUMPET SCHOLARSHIP

The band department at New Mexico State University continues to grow. Our numbers are larger and the quality of our performing ensembles is on the rise. We are now competing for outstanding music students with other major universities. As we continue this journey, it is important that we establish permanent funds to support the bands at NMSU.

In 2003, Don Dearholdt established an endowment in the name George DeFoe, his former trumpet teacher, and Ken Van Winkle, former trumpet teacher and current Director of Bands. He initially purchased a new trumpet for one of our students and has committed to providing half of the $10,000 to endow this scholarship on a permanent basis. The Music Department has committed to raising the other half of the endowment. Your contribution to this fund will be a tremendous help in providing scholarship money to a New Mexico State University trumpet student.

George DeFoe is an accomplished teacher of music theory, music history, and brass performance. His professional background includes positions as a college music instructor, church choir director, an administrator, orchestra conductor, and jazz educator. His diverse background and involvement in music education at all levels has inspired many musicians.

Dr. Ken Van Winklecurrently conducts the New Mexico State University "Symphonic Winds," the NMSU "Pride" marching band and also teaches conducting. He performs in the Quintessential Brass Quintet of El Paso, TX, the New Mexico State University faculty brass quintet, and is active as an adjudicator, conductor, and band clinician throughout the United States. Dr. Van Winkle was recently named the 2003 New Mexico Music Educator of the Year.
