GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP APPLICATION AND PROCEDURE
Any student seeking a master's degree may apply to the Head of the Music Department for a graduate assistantship. An undergraduate overall grade-point average of 2.8 (A=4 points) is required for consideration.
ASSISTANT ASSIGNMENTS
Graduate assistant assignments are made by the department head. Assignment forms are distributed at the beginning of the fall semester, listing duties and the supervising faculty members. The assistant should report to the department head if his/her weekly clock hours prove to be significantly below or above the assigned time so that an adjustment can be made. He/she should also report any serious conflict or misunderstanding which may hamper proper discharge of duties. At the end of each semester the assistant's duties terminate only when the work of the semester is completed. Each assistant should check with his supervising faculty as to the closing date.
OFFICE ASSIGNMENTS
Each graduate assistant is assigned a space by the department head.
BUILDING SECURITY AND ACCESS
Keys will be provided to assistants for their office and the building. Extreme care must be taken in safeguarding the keys to prevent their unauthorized use. The loss of a key, which may require the complete re-keying of building, must be reported immediately to the department head.
ATTENDANCE AT FACULTY MEETINGS
Graduate assistants are invited to the opening faculty meeting of the year, and may be invited to other meetings when occasions arise involving their interests and concerns.
MAILBOXES
Mailboxes are located in the departmental office, and one is assigned to each graduate assistant.
USE OF TELEPHONE
A faculty telephone is available in the departmental office for long distance calls. The use of this line must be business related, and must be cleared by the office.
CONTINUANCE OF GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS
Continuance of an assistantship is dependent upon satisfactory execution of the assistantship assignments. Normally, an assistantship is automatically continued for the academic year. An assistantship may be held for a maximum of 2 years. The graduate assistant must maintain a "B" average.
COURSE LOAD FOR ASSISTANTSHIPS
A graduate assistant is obligated to enroll for, and maintain enrollment in a minimum of 9 credits of graduate work per semester, unless prior approval of the Dean of the Graduate School is secured. An assistant may not enroll for more than 10 credits (12 with overload permit) for any one semester. During 6- week summer sessions, graduate assistants must take at least 2 credits but no more than 4 credits. Courses taken for audit or undergraduate deficiencies are counted in the maximum total course load; audited classes cannot be used for the minimum course load requirement; and only 3 hours of undergraduate deficiency can be counted for the minimum course load.
