ABOUT THE ENSEMBLES
Symphonic Winds
"Symphonic Winds" is the top wind ensemble and heart of the wind and percussion department at New Mexico State University. This elite ensemble meets both fall and spring semesters performing the very best literature for winds. "Winds" highlights the talents of the finest wind and percussion students on campus. The band performs six concerts on campus each year. Membership is determined by audition and is comprised primarily of undergraduate music majors.
The ensemble has performed throughout the Southwest including the New Mexico Music Educators conference and the Southwest Division of the College Band Directors National Association. The group has been active in the commission of new works and has participated in numerous collaborative commission projects including new band works by Michael Torke, David Maslanka, David Gillingham, and Jack Stamp. Most recently “Symphonic Winds” was the first band from the United States to be the featured at the National Band Festival in Paipa, Colombia. The band is under the direction of Dr. Ken Van Winkle.

Symphonic Band
"Symphonic Band" is comprised of wind and percussion students who wish to continue playing in band during the spring semester. This ensemble plays the finest of band literature and performs three concerts during the second semester, including commencement ceremonies in May. The band’s membership is determined by audition and comprised of both music and non-music majors. The band is under the direction of Mr. Monty Hill, Assistant Director of Bands.
Campus Band
“Campus Band” meets only each spring semester and membership is open to all students who can play a wind or percussion instrument. This is a non-auditioned band that represents a cross section of the student body at NMSU and is comprised of primarily non-music majors. Campus Band performs one concert during the spring semester and is under the direction of Dr. Ken Van Winkle.
