Shelly Stovall received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1987, and in 1990 concurrently completed a Master of Music, and a Master of Arts, all from New Mexico State University. In 2000 she completed a PhD in Educational Management and Development, with a minor in music, also from New Mexico State University. Dr. Stovall joined the teaching faculty in the Music Department at NMSU in 1991. Although she has taught a variety of courses, ranging from general education to graduate courses, she has specialized her focus on music theory. She is currently the theory coordinator, and students in the freshman and sophomore theory courses use materials she has developed. She is currently working with a nationally known publisher to publish her materials in a formalized textbook.

Dr. Stovall is integrally involved in the development and implementation of assessment programs within the music department, and actively serves in the development and maintenance of assessment practices across the college of Arts and Sciences.
