Calvin Silas, who is enrolled in the engineering program at Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI), was selected as
the recipient of the President Obama Scholarship program in Fall 2010.
Calvin, a rising Native American engineer and scientist, participated in the first Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA)-Argonne
Indian Education Renewable Energy Challenge in 2009, and his team placed first in this national competition.
Calvin attended SIPI in Spring 2011 and plans to transfer to university. At SIPI, Calvin was on the President’s List and named SIPI Student of the Year for 2010-11. Currently, he is participating in the 2011 Summer Community College Opportunity for Research Experience
(SCCORE) program on the NMSU campus.
