There is a long history of cooperation between the United States National Park Service and Mexico regarding preservation and protection of natural and cultural resources. The following Agreements allow this to happen:

Agreement Between the National Park Service of the Department of the Interior of the United States of America and the Secretariat of Environment, Natural Resources, and Fisheries of the United Mexican States on Cooperation in Management and Protection of National Parks and other Protected Areas. Signed, 11/30/1988; resigned 1995; resigned 2000.

Memorandum of Understanding between the National Park Service of the Department of Interior of the United States of America and the National Council for Culture and the Arts through the National Institute of Anthropology and History of the United States Mexican States on Cooperation in the Identification, Conservation, Management, and Research in Cultural Heritage Sites. Signed 5/10/1998.

These formal agreements allow informal and formal exchange of information and cooperation between both countries. Specialists from both countries manage bi-national projects and activities that include international forums, human resource development programs, park planning, research, interpretation, and environmental education.
