Department Description-
New Mexico State University, based in Las Cruces, is the state’s land-grant institution, with more that 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students on its five campuses. The AEAB Department is part of the College of Agriculture and Home Economics, which is home to seven other academic departments, five extension departments, approximately 150 faculty members and 1,800 students. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Food and Agribusiness and Natural Resource Economics and Policy, and participates in the offering of four graduate degrees- A Master of Science in Agricultural Economics, a Master of Agriculture with an emphasis in Agribusiness, an MBA with specialization in Agricultural Business, and a Doctorate in Economic Development (DED). Qualifications: Ph.D. (in hand by hire date) in Agricultural, Resource, Applied or General Economics or in a related discipline with a well-defined field specialization in economic development and knowledge and expertise on both rural and urban issues. Capacity to apply economic and business analysis tools, such as econometrics, simulation modeling, or math programming, to the evaluation of economic development problems and issues. Ability to communicate research findings to all appropriate audiences. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with students, public officials and industry representatives at various levels. Strong leadership and organizational development skills as well as ability to function in a diverse, multicultural team-work environment. Familiarity with the economic development issues facing the Southwestern U.S. and the State of New Mexico and outstanding graduate teaching and student mentoring record in the field of economic development preferred.
Examples of Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to teach at least three courses each year, mostly related to the DED program, and to be the major advisor of several doctoral students on a continuous basis. Teaching will include distance education and travel to deliver lectures in various locations. The successful candidate will also be expected to intensively participate in the administrative and management aspects and in the recruitment of students for the DED program. He/she will be expected to obtain external grant funding to support assistantships for DED students and to conduct cutting-edge research addressing local, regional, and national economic development issues. Aggressive dissemination of research results through refereed journal article publications, presentations at professional, industry and public officials meetings, and other suitable venues is expected as well.
